How to sell a high-value car safely and with clear control.

A safe sale is a sequence: establish who you are dealing with, release information progressively, control physical access and transfer the vehicle only after the completion conditions are satisfied.

01

Protect documents and personal information

A V5C helps a prospective buyer check the vehicle details, but the DVLA advises sellers not to share its document reference number or pictures and copies of the log book. Share only the information needed at each stage.

Remove home addresses, previous owner information, geolocation data and unrelated personal documents from photography or digital folders before release.

02

Qualify before the viewing

Establish the prospect’s full identity, contact details, buying position and reason for interest. A request to view immediately is not a substitute for credible answers.

Decide the viewing location, who will attend and whether the vehicle will be driven. Check driving entitlement and insurance rather than assuming either.

03

Keep control of keys and movement

Do not leave a prospect alone with keys or documents. Agree the test route and retain control over how the vehicle leaves the property.

For specialist or very high-value cars, a professional facility or managed viewing can reduce address exposure and provide a clearer record of attendance.

04

Treat payment and handover as one controlled event

Confirm cleared funds directly with your bank using a trusted contact route. Screenshots and pending-payment messages are not cleared funds.

Complete the agreed receipt, keys, accessories and condition record together. Tell DVLA when the vehicle is sold and give the buyer the correct new-keeper information. The official process is available at GOV.UK.

  • Do not release the vehicle on a promise of funds.
  • Retain copies of the signed sale and handover records.
  • If retaining a private registration, complete that process before sale.
  • Tell your insurer promptly after completion.

Private questions

Clear answers before an instruction begins.

Should I send a buyer a picture of the V5C?

No. DVLA guidance says not to share pictures or copies of the log book or its document reference number. A buyer can inspect appropriate details without receiving a reusable copy.

When should the vehicle leave?

Only after the agreed funds are independently confirmed as cleared and the sale, keeper and handover records are ready to be completed.
