Private sale, dealer offer or part-exchange: choosing the right route.

The best disposal route depends on more than the highest advertised number. Time, certainty, access, preparation and the owner’s appetite for administration all matter.

01

Dealer purchase

A dealer purchase offers a relatively direct route and may provide rapid certainty. The dealer must allow for preparation, stock risk, funding, warranty exposure and resale margin, so the offer is not the same as the retail asking market.

It can be the right answer where timing and simplicity matter more than exploring the vehicle’s full private-market position.

02

Part-exchange

Part-exchange joins two transactions and can make the change of vehicle convenient. That same structure can make it harder to see the standalone economics of each side.

Ask for the replacement vehicle price and the part-exchange allowance separately, then compare the net change cost rather than one headline figure.

03

Owner-managed private sale

A private sale may provide access to an end buyer, but the owner becomes responsible for valuation, presentation, advertising, screening, viewings, negotiation, payment risk and transfer administration.

For a valuable vehicle, the cost is not just advertising. It is the exposure of time, address, personal information and decision-making to an unmanaged enquiry stream.

04

Managed private representation

A managed service preserves owner control while transferring the work of research, preparation, enquiry handling and completion to one accountable relationship.

The fee should be compared with the expected net outcome, the included work and the risks removed, not treated as if every route provides the same service.

05

A practical decision test

Choose the route that matches the objective you actually have.

  • If immediate certainty is paramount, obtain transparent dealer and part-exchange figures.
  • If maximising exposure matters and you have time and experience, assess whether you want to run the private sale yourself.
  • If outcome, discretion and time protection all matter, compare a written managed-sale proposal on a net basis.

Private questions

Clear answers before an instruction begins.

Is a dealer offer always below market value?

A dealer offer reflects a different transaction: the dealer assumes stock, preparation and resale risk. Compare it with the likely net private outcome and the time and work required, not with an advertised asking price alone.

Can I obtain several routes before deciding?

Yes. A responsible decision can include independent evidence, dealer or part-exchange figures and a managed-sale proposal before any instruction is accepted.
